Premier Tents
Certificate of Fire Resistance

Premier Tents warrants the fabrics used in this Apex Series Canopy (*small tent) that is displaying our name, logo and Warning Label have been certified by the manufacturer or its supplier as having been made to flame resistant material so that:

  • As an international manufacturer, we produce our Fire Resistance materials to meet or exceed the standards required for USA, Germany, and Canada.  Our Polyester fabrics have been independently tested and shown to meet or exceed the requirements of the CPAI-84(USA), ULC-S-109 (Canada), and DIN 4102B1 (Germany) specifications for wall and top material.
  • The CPAI-84 Specification also  meets the requirements in the following codes: California State Fire Marshal, Title 19, Subchapter 1, Article 4 section 332(a)(2)
  • Definitions: Small Tent. A tent designed for use by less than 10 people. (California State Fire Marshal, Title 19, Subchapter 1, Article 4 section 310)
  • CPAI-84: Fabrics complying with the flame resistance requirements set forth in “A Specification for Flame-Resistant Materials Used in Camping Tentage” 1995 revision.

Water Resistance Information

Apex Series Water Resistance

Every Premier Apex top is manufactured from the highest quality 600D polyester for long life and durability.

The water resistance built into any fabric is affected by four components: Fabric type, Rainfall Intensity, Drop size, and Rainfall Duration. Each of these four variables alters the characteristics of water resistant fabrics, and when taken together can change the way a canopy handles rain.

There are 3 common types of materials seen commercially in the construction of canopy tops: Polyester, Nylon, and Vinyl.

Polyester Fabric.

A woven material, polyester is an excellent fabric that is used in todays technical gear when high performance is demanded. By its very nature polyester is breathable, as it is comprised of fibers that are woven together. Its water resistance is created by applying water resistant coatings. Our fabrics go through a three step process to become water resistant.

  1. The polyester fibers, prior to being woven into fabric sheets, are treated in a bath of water resistant material.
  2. The treated fibers are then woven into fabric, where upon it has another application of water resistant material. Our fire retardant and UV resistant membrane is then applied to the underside of our fabric.
  3. Last step in our process is the application of a DuPont Teflon Stain/Water Resistant coating. This provides superior resistance to dirt and eases cleaning of our canopy tops, as well as increasing the water resistance already built into our tops.

Nylon Fabric.

Also a woven material, nylon is used in construction of some companies’ canopy tops but does have significant drawbacks to it use. Nylon when wet, stretches, which creates a situation where puddling can occur on the canopy top. It seems contrary that when you need the canopy to hold out the rain, Nylon actually stretches which allows for water retention on the canopy top which may lead to top collapse. No Premier Tents canopy products are constructed of Nylon.

Vinyl.

Vinyl on the other hand is extruded as a single layer of water proof material, but must be mated to another material to make it strong. It is most commonly seen on large commercial canopies due to its water proof characteristics. While it is a waterproof alternative to fabric, it does have some significant drawbacks as well. First is the weight of the fabric. To be strong enough vinyl must be thick, which increases the weight of the canopy top sometimes beyond what the frame can handle. Second, vinyl is not rugged enough to handle the extremes of constant opening and closing. Often this high-use leads to breakdown of the vinyl and leads to subsequent leaking. Third, Vinyl is adversely affected by cold temperatures. Temperatures below 50 degrees make the vinyl stiff, non-pliable, and can lead to the Vinyl cracking just from the canopy being folded up.

Intensity: This is a measure of the total volume of water that is landing on the canopy. Storms in Florida have the capability of producing a higher intensity rain event than a typical rain event in Oregon. The higher the intensity, the less time the fabric can hold out the rain. Water resistant fabric can stand up to a low intensity rain event much longer than a high intensity rain event.

Drop Size: This measures the size of the water drops, therefore the amount of force the raindrops are hitting the fabric with. Water resistant fabric is rated based on the amount of water it can hold back prior to leaking. A common fabric rating is 300-600mm of water. This is tested by supporting a column of water placed directly against the fabric. The column when filled with 600mm of water exerts pressure against the fabric while it is trying to get through. Fabrics rated 600mm water resistant will stand up to this force, but no more. If more is added, the pressure created forces the water through the weave of the fabric.  A small drop of rain (drizzle) has a very small size, therefore a small amount of energy when it lands on the fabric. Large drops hit the fabric with much more force, and in some cases can exert enough energy to penetrate the fabric.

Duration: This is a measure of the total time that the rain event is occurring. The longer the duration of the rain event, the higher the probability of water coming through the fabric.

These three variables dictate the length of total time a water resistant fabric will hold up. Even if only one of these variables exceeds the fabrics ratings, the effect on total time of water resistance can be significant.

Intensity x Drop Size/Duration = Total Time of Water Resistance

Water resistant fabric can remain intact if the rain event is of low intensity for a longer duration; or a higher intensity rain event for a short duration. If conditions exist which provide a high intensity rainfall, coupled with a long duration, the total time the fabric retains its water resistant integrity will be much shorter.

Premier Tents exclusively uses High-Performance polyester in the construction of its tops and walls. The following ratings apply to our 600D fabrics:

  • 2000mm water resistance, PU X2
  • DuPont Teflon Stain/Water Resistance PU X1
  • Rated for: 0.25”/hour for 4 hours TTWR*
  • UV light blocking, 99.5%
  • UV Grade 4 (color fade)
  • CPAI-84 Fire Retardant

*Total Time Water Resistant

Care and Maintenance of your Premier Tents Products

To ensure long lasting durability and the best possible protection for your Premier Tents products, please follow these care and maintenance instructions:

  • Use Simple Green or a mild liquid soap (not detergent).
  • Remove the top from the frame and place it on a clean flat surface for major cleaning. For spot cleaning, leave attached to frame and use a soft bristle plastic scrub brush. DO NOT PUT CANOPY TOP IN WASHING MACHINE.
  • With a soft bristle brush, gently scrub in a circular motion.
  • Once finished, thoroughly rinse the top and reattach to the frame.
  • Allow the frame to remain open to arms length to ensure that the top dries completely.
  • Once the top is completely dry, close and store the shelter.
